Why Chess Tournaments Help Kids Improve

admin — Wed, 08/26/2009 - 10:51

I found this page on why chess tournaments are actually good for kids:

http://www.masscharterschools.org/fellowships/docs/159/Chiappetta5.html

Chess tournaments are a tool for developing healthy competition, sportsmanship, and inter- and intra-school community. They provide students with intellectually stimulating activities that extend beyond the classroom and into those times when youth are most at-risk (after-school, weekends, and school holidays).

Carver Center Open Day Chess Simultaneous Exhibition

VictorTan — Sun, 08/16/2009 - 16:02

Things went great for this year's Carver Center Open Day where Raymond Duchesne, the resident chess club host kindly agreed to perform a Chess Simul. For those that don't know what that is, you can check out the wikipedia article : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simultaneous_exhibition And a youtube video is below after the break.

Chess in a Community

VictorTan — Fri, 08/07/2009 - 12:51

I am sitting here in New Jersey at a chess camp with my son. The instructor (a well known chess instructor) is teaching the class of enthusiastic and talented students in some of the finer points of chess. Obviously even though I understand the words and can see the board he uses, I realize that I cannot 'see' as much as most of the kids in the class. Instead, my mind wanders to other matters that seem to be at play in this part of the country where chess is concerned.
