New Leesburg Chess Club Policy Impacts Aug 22nd Chess Tournament (Links fixed)

VictorTan — Wed, 08/12/2009 - 11:10

I disagree with the policy but as I have stated before, they have the full legal right to decide their policy. I'm only sorry that they have it at all after all these years of working hand in hand with Carver Senior Center. It is unfortunate that LCC has implemented this new policy. You can see it here. I mean here. They have also dropped the meetup event on their website.

Loudoun Chess will:

1. Keep any and all links to any chess club that is currently on its website regardless of their policy.
2. Announce any and all tournaments that any chess club in Loudoun County (and even further) holds.
3. Announce other events of interest - and if we miss one you think should be publicized, just send us an email.
4. Always welcome everyone to our events, regardless of affiliation or lack of affiliation as long as they follow the event rules.

The reason is that I believe in these policies is that chess (whether for adults or kids) is more important than any one club, one school or one person. It teaches kids the values that will help them later in life. It reminds us that there are consequences for our choices. It trains all of us to be sharper and more thorough. It instills discipline. More chess activity and more chess information in the county is a great thing. I look forward to seeing the activity grow.

So, to start:

A. Leesburg Chess Club has announced a poll and tournament for October in Leesburg. See http://www.meetup.com/Leesburg-Chess/messages/7163362/ . I mean here
B. LCC also has a family picnic going on. See http://www.meetup.com/Leesburg-Chess/calendar/10875459/.

Due to Leesburg Chess Club's new policy. The chess tournament for August 22nd will be impacted. However, we WILL hold it regardless. Please show your support by coming. I am not collecting any money for myself or for Loudoun Chess. Raymond Duchesne doesn't get anything either. The only fee goes to Carver Center which is a county community center. They charge $2 per player. You cannot get a better deal. Based on previous tournaments, it will be fun and challenging as well.

If you really want to help this tournament. Please download our tournament announcement flyer from HERE. Print it out and put a copy out at your local supermarket, community center, library or any public bulletin boards. Don't let this new policy hurt a great community event that we all value.

New policy?

Guest — Wed, 08/12/2009 - 21:11

Hi Victor:

You have a Very nice website! I appreciate your fairness and honesty.

Just to set the record straight, it was Raymond Duchesne of the Carver Club who decided to break relations with the Leesburg Club. I did not decide to break relations with the Carver Club.

Raymond emailed me: "I hope that you will accept that the "Carver Center Chess group" distances itself from the Leesburg club..."

He also wrote: "I will have to ask you stop collecting the 1$ contributions as a mark of that independence."

I can hardly be expected to publicize an organization that does not want to associate with me, and that does not want to support the web site that does the publicizing.

So you can see that what you call the "new policy", was merely a reasonable response to the statements of the Carver Club.

Best Wishes for Good Chess!

Larry

Larry, I think your approach

Larry,

I think your approach is misguided.

The Leesburg Meetup Group and the Carver Center are not the same entity. It is hardly that the Carver Center "doesn't want to associate" with the Leesburg Meetup but that it should be clear that they are separate organizations.

Making members aware of all playing opportunities can only benefit chess in the area and your decision to not publicize local tournaments doesn't serve this purpose.

Collecting fees to fund the Leesburg Meetup at a Carver Center event does not seem appropriate as non-members are participating. There are other ways to fund the group that "passing the hat" at other organization's events..
