Results of Loudoun County High School Chess Team Championships and Open Rapids (Updated)

Loudoun County High School Team Results.
This was the first High School Team Chess Championship and students from several Loudoun County high schools competed in a casual and friendly atmosphere at Stone Bridge High School in Ashburn.
We had a total of 22 students playing for the team trophies and I could clearly see that some were glad to be able to play others besides their fellow schoolmates.
For those that have played in one of my tournaments where I am a TD, you will usually obtain a local rating. That was the number I used for seeding the first round.
Some did get a kick out of playing an over energetic 9 year old that seemed to be hanging around the cafeteria. The players really enjoyed the event.
One thing about playing others Over The Board (OTB) is that you get to see and feel different styles of play and different openings. There was no trash talking in the tournament proper although the skittles did offer some friendly 'banter'.
As Mr. Al Faraone said, Stone Bridge won by sheer force of numbers. Note: guy wearing dark green shirt in the background on the right is not a Stone Bridge student. He's a supporter. Although the guy on the left is Dino, a math teach at Stone Bridge and yes, a good player too.
1st Place - Stone Bridge High School
2nd Place - Broad Run High School
3rd Place - Heritage High School
We now have an official high school chess team champion in the county. Congratulations to all the schools that came to participate.
We decided to recognize the top 3 scoring individuals as well even though this was a team championship. They are:
1st Place - Carlo del Mundo
2nd Place - Rohan Kothakapu
3rd Place - Andy Wong
Open Rapids - Parents, Friends etc
We also had a side tournament in conjunction with the Leesburg Chess Club. The results were:
1st Place - Charles Frey
2nd Place - Dino Obregon
3rd Place - Stephane Fellah

We had about 18 players in total for the rapids which was better probably than when we had the blitz.
We even had some coaches from the high schools play in the event. No the flags in the background were not put up there symbollically for this event.

Here's Larry again taking on Stephane who went on to win his first medal in 25 years that day and seemed genuinely surprised. Stephane is never an easy pushover from what I hear.
The player on the left above, Charles Frey went on to win the whole enchilada with a perfect score of 5 wins. My final comment on the players in this sort of local stuff is that you never know who might turn up across the board.
Future Stuff
Thanks again to everyone that helped make this possible, especially Stone Bridge for hosting, and sponsors like Al Faraone, Charlene Carvajal and Dino Obregon from Stone Bridge. Thanks to the teachers/coaches like Keith Kyger and Anthony Long and of course, all the players for coming down to play.
We hope to be able to hold a team championship level competition for every scholastic level in Loudoun County so count on it next year and we'll probably start in the fall. More details in the future.
