Tournament Announcement
admin — Tue, 10/05/2010 - 12:38
Ashburn Chess Club is pleased to announce a new Grand Prix tournament format in addition to the monthly quads currently in place. It will not be on the same Saturday as our usual quads and will be held approximately monthly. It will be in the Individual-Team format and will consist of one round of G/90 time control. This should give everyone a chance to get a game with a longer time control that we usually play at Ashburn.
The first of this GP90 event will be October 30th at Sakasa. The line starts at 3PM and closes at 3:30PM for a start at 4PM after we have fun picking the teams.

Ashburn Chess Club 1st Anniversary Tournament (July 31st) Report
VictorTan — Wed, 08/18/2010 - 21:00
Stick around chess clubs long enough and eventually you will get a
disagreement over something or other. At a recent tournament out of
state, I saw at least one player lose his temper and control. At a
chess club, given enough time, you'll see some unhappiness at some
point. In our case however it happened a year ago and it certainly
has ended up for the better because Ashburn Chess Club was created.
We held our first anniversary tournament on 31st July at the nearby
Springhill Suites hotel in Ashburn. It was the first time we had run
One Parent's Opinion
VictorTan — Fri, 04/30/2010 - 08:23
OK, so you are starting out your child in playing chess. There are
lots of things that I can say and lots of approaches you can take.
However, chess is not just tournaments for your child. It is about
giving him or her something that may last a lifetime.
The first question is not for a your child or the chess coach or
another parent. The first question is for yourself. It is made up of
a single word. Why? Why are you teaching your child chess? Why do
you want him or her to get better in chess? Why bother? Only you can
answer that.
Article on Why Chess Should Be Taught In Schools

Historically, there may have been evidence to question the efficacy and strength of American schools in teaching math and science - especially at the elementary level. The Russians have not been well known for making that mistake. Please see the story below as to their findings and recommendations:

Loudoun Kids Doing Well in USCF Scholastics Tournament
VictorTan — Tue, 10/13/2009 - 09:54
Some of you may know about my mentioning that Loudoun County has been a dearth of rated scholastic competitors. It appears that things are changing. Two VA State Scholastics ago, there were only 10 from the county. This past March there were 15 in Charlottesville. Yesterday, at the C.D. Hylton High School, where Brian Dickerson of Spotsy Chess was holding his season opener we had a great showing from Loudoun County.
Primary
Folks I am very happy to reveal that we have three new and capable chess players in Loudoun County. Oh, and they happen to be quite young too because they played in the Primary section. I didn't get to meet them personally but I did catch a glimpse of two of them as I called out their names in roll call at the beginning of the tournament. The three are Bryant, Nathan and Gideon Lohr from Leesburg. If you're reading this Lohr family, please give me me a wave next time! Welcome to Loudoun County! The three of them (plus one more older sibling in a different section) made up Lohr Academy as a team and took clear first place ahead of local primary school historical powerhouses!
Kenneth Culvert Elementary made up of the Marvil children came in 6th team with one of them playing in their very first tournament.
OK.
